Deaconess Illinois Medical Center Earns Primary Stroke Center Certification, Expands Neurologic Care in the Region
Marion, Illinois – Deaconess Illinois Medical Center has officially earned Primary Stroke Center Certification, reinforcing its commitment to providing advanced, lifesaving stroke care to patients across Southern Illinois.
This designation recognizes hospitals that meet rigorous national standards for rapid stroke diagnosis, treatment and coordinated care. Achieving Primary Stroke Center status demonstrates that Deaconess Illinois Medical Center has the specialized staff, protocols and technology in place to quickly identify and treat stroke patients when it matters most.
In addition to earning this certification, Deaconess Illinois Medical Center is also home to the only dedicated neuroscience unit in the region, providing specialized care for patients experiencing neurologic conditions. The unit is designed specifically for the treatment and recovery of patients with stroke, brain injuries, seizures and other neurological disorders.
“This certification reflects the dedication of our clinical teams and the systems we’ve put in place to provide rapid, coordinated stroke care,” said Ashley Hornik, Nurse Practitioner, with the Deaconess Illinois Medical Center neurology team. “Beyond achieving Primary Stroke Center status, we are proud to offer the region’s only dedicated neuroscience unit. This specialized environment allows our team to focus entirely on neurologic conditions, ensuring patients receive expert care and recovery support.”
Through this certification and the dedication of the neuroscience unit, Deaconess Illinois Medical Center continues to expand access to advanced neurological care close to home for communities across Southern Illinois.
“Our dedicated neuroscience unit allows us to focus exclusively on neurological recovery,” said Courtney Thomas, MSN, RN, SCRN, Manager of Neurologic Services at Deaconess Illinois Medical Center. “Combined with our Primary Stroke Certification and a multidisciplinary team, we’re able to provide comprehensive stroke care from emergency treatment through rehabilitation.”
